The Defense Secretary is committed to putting an end to the issue of substandard military housing following the completion of upgrades to 1,000 homes ahead of schedule. John Healey has directed an additional 250 military properties to receive priority renovations in the coming months, marking a 25% increase from the original target set eight months ago. The housing improvement initiative has already enhanced nearly 700 properties in England, over 150 in Northern Ireland, more than 100 in Wales, and over 50 in Scotland.
In an exclusive interview with The Mirror at a barracks in Colchester, Mr. Healey emphasized the positive impact of the progress on morale and retention, underscoring his determination to eradicate the longstanding issue of inadequate military housing. He stated, “One of the most significant scandals in recent years has been the deplorable condition of the homes where our service personnel and their families reside. Cold, damp conditions, leaking roofs, and mold in children’s bedrooms have been unacceptable.”
Mr. Healey highlighted the government’s actions, stating, “Within six months of taking office, we reclaimed 36,000 military family homes from privatization, initiating a £9 billion investment plan over the next decade to upgrade or rebuild nine out of every ten homes for Forces families.” He announced the successful completion of the target to revamp 1,000 homes ahead of schedule, ensuring more families have suitable accommodation this Christmas.
The refurbished homes have undergone comprehensive renovations, including new flooring, upgrades to heating systems, roof repairs, and the installation of modern bathrooms, kitchens, windows, and doors. Mr. Healey emphasized that the improvements not only boost morale but also contribute to retaining personnel in the armed forces.
Cpl Jack Crean, along with his partner Nina and their one-year-old son Charlie, expressed their satisfaction with moving into one of the newly renovated homes at Bassingbourn Barracks in Cambridgeshire. Cpl Crean shared, “We are delighted to be settling into our new home just in time for Christmas. The entire family is much happier here, especially Charlie. Living in a modern house improves our quality of life, and I can leave for duty knowing my family is in a comfortable, updated home.”
