Scott Paton, a regular visitor to Les Sherman Park, shared his experience of coming face-to-face with a curious coyote in mid-August. While the encounter was non-threatening, Paton believes the animal may have been seeking food. Despite his calm demeanor, Paton alerted fellow park-goers about the coyote’s presence.
Concerns have arisen in the Cathedral neighborhood, where numerous individuals have reported encounters with a coyote at Les Sherman Park and Kiwanis Waterfall Park through social media. Accounts describe the coyote approaching people and their pets, with some instances of chasing reported. City Councilor David Froh also had a close encounter with a coyote while out for a run in Les Sherman Park.
Acknowledging the commonality of wildlife sightings in the city, Froh emphasized the importance of addressing persistent sightings for public safety. The City of Regina confirmed receiving reports of two coyotes in the area and is collaborating with conservation officers to safely relocate the animals. Froh reassured residents that the removal process would be conducted safely and without the use of firearms.
Despite the understandable concerns raised by coyote sightings, Froh reminded the public that such encounters are part of the natural environment in Regina. He emphasized the need to prioritize the safety of both pets and wildlife. As efforts are made to address the presence of coyotes, residents are encouraged to report any sightings that may pose a safety risk to the city authorities.
