Conor Benn’s Departure Sparks Criticism

SportsConor Benn's Departure Sparks Criticism

Barry Hearn heavily criticized the lack of manners shown by Conor Benn in his departure from Matchroom to Zuffa Boxing, bypassing any communication with Eddie Hearn. The 29-year-old officially announced the split, opting to be managed by the Saudi-backed promoter under UFC president Dana White. Benn chose to part ways with the promoters who had supported him for a decade, even through past challenges like failing a drug test. Despite Eddie Hearn’s efforts to discuss their future collaboration, Benn showed no interest, causing disappointment for Hearn Sr.

Expressing his disappointment, Hearn Sr. mentioned feeling let down by Benn’s conduct, questioning their past support for him. The move to Zuffa, following the signing of Jai Opetaia, means Benn will no longer be under Eddie Hearn’s guidance. Addressing the situation, Barry Hearn revealed that after a decade of partnership, Benn suggested involving lawyers when Eddie proposed a meeting to discuss the transition, labeling the situation as the most unpleasant he has encountered in his lengthy sports promotion career.

As the mandatory challenger for the WBC welterweight title, Benn defended his decision, stating that rejecting the lucrative offer would have been unwise. Hearn Sr. emphasized that while he respects individual choices, the lack of professionalism in Benn’s approach did not meet their expected standards.
