The incident in Portsmouth occurred after masked anti-immigration protestors disrupted traffic at Dover, the busiest ferry port in Britain, a day earlier, causing disruptions for travelers and cargo vehicles bound for France. Both groups were reportedly led by Daniel Thomas, an associate of veteran far-right activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, also known as Tommy Robinson.
Concerns over immigration have been a focal point for politicians like Nigel Farage of the hard-right party Reform UK, with more than 40,000 people undertaking the perilous journey across the English Channel last year. The issue has been labeled a crisis and exploited by anti-immigration activists to attract support.

The vessel carrying approximately 140 individuals to Portsmouth departed from Normandy, significantly farther west than the usual departure points near Calais, making it a longer and riskier voyage. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency coordinated the operation involving lifeboats, a coast guard helicopter, and a plane to safely bring the migrants ashore.
