A critical warning has surfaced for users of Google’s widely used Chrome web browser regarding the discovery of malicious extensions that pose a serious threat. These extensions, when installed, can potentially allow hackers to spy on users’ browsing activities, putting their personal data at risk.
Initially undetectable for viruses upon release and download, these rogue extensions were identified by the team at Koi Security. After installation, hackers clandestinely implant spyware to steal sensitive information at a later stage, impacting over 2 million individuals. Shockingly, 18 Chrome extensions containing malware managed to secure positive reviews and even made their way onto Google’s official Chrome store.
Among the affected extensions are emoji keyboards, weather services, YouTube enhancements, and more. The list includes a mix of Chrome and Edge browser extensions targeting a wide range of functionalities.
If you suspect having any of the mentioned extensions, immediate action is advised. The security experts at Malwarebytes recommend clearing all browsing data to eliminate any stolen tracking identifiers or session tokens. Additionally, users are urged to monitor account activities for any anomalies and set up two-factor authentication for enhanced security measures. Resetting the browser settings to default is also recommended to undo any alterations made by the malicious extensions.
Google has confirmed the removal of all compromised extensions, ensuring new users are not at risk of infection. It’s crucial for Chrome users to remain vigilant, follow security protocols, and take necessary precautions to safeguard their online activities.
