“Deadly High-Speed Train Collision in Spain: 24 Confirmed Dead”

International"Deadly High-Speed Train Collision in Spain: 24 Confirmed Dead"

Spain’s high-speed rail operator, iryo, has provided a significant update following a recent incident where two high-speed trains derailed. One of the trains, carrying around 300 passengers from Malaga to Madrid, derailed near Adamuz in Cordoba, colliding with another train en route from Madrid to Huelva.

The accident, which took place around 7.45 pm (1845 GMT), occurred shortly after the Malaga to Madrid train departed Cordoba. The second train belonged to Renfe, Spain’s public train company, and bore the brunt of the collision. Search and rescue efforts have been ongoing throughout the night to assist those trapped in the wreckage. As a result, all high-speed train services between Madrid and Andalusia have been temporarily halted until Tuesday.

Iryo, the operator of the first derailed train, updated on the evacuation progress in the early hours of Monday. The evacuation of all passengers on service 6189 has been successfully completed, with injured individuals receiving medical treatment, and the rest relocated as per local authorities’ guidance. Updates will continue to be provided through official channels, and a helpline for affected passengers has been made available at 900 001 402.

The cause of the crash remains unknown, with Spain’s transport minister describing it as a peculiar incident on a renovated section of track. The rescue operation is complex, particularly due to difficult access to some carriages, including three that fell down a four-meter embankment. Specialized teams from neighboring regions, comprising firefighters, paramedics, and forensic experts, have been mobilized to aid in the rescue efforts.

As of now, at least 24 fatalities have been confirmed, along with 15 critically injured, 30 with severe injuries, and 170 with minor injuries. The number of missing persons is yet to be determined. Updates on the situation can be followed through live updates provided.
