A tragic incident unfolded in the Mawgan area of Helston as Storm Goretti wreaked havoc on Cornwall earlier this week, resulting in the death of a man when a tree fell on a caravan. The man, in his 50s, lost his life in the unfortunate accident, which occurred amid powerful winds reaching up to 99mph in the region.
Authorities from Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that the man’s death is not considered suspicious, with his next of kin duly informed of the heartbreaking event. The Met Office issued an extremely rare red warning for wind in parts of the South West on Thursday, accompanied by amber and yellow alerts for snow, ice, wind, and rain across the UK.
Emergency services were swiftly dispatched to the scene following the incident on Thursday evening. Efforts to safely remove the fallen tree and conduct further investigations took place the following day. The police stated that the man was found deceased inside the caravan, and while the death is not deemed suspicious, preparations are underway to present a file to the coroner.
As the weather situation unfolds, yellow warnings for snow and ice remain in effect across various regions of the UK, promising some respite with improving conditions and occasional sunny spells on Saturday. However, the calm may be short-lived, as another weather front is expected to approach from the west on Sunday, posing a risk of disruptive snowfall, particularly in Scotland and northern England.
Met Office’s Chief Forecaster Steve Willington emphasized the potential for additional snow accumulation on Sunday, with low temperatures heightening the risk of ice. Areas previously affected by severe snowfall are likely to experience further disruptions, while central and southern England and Wales may see the snowfall as rain, leading to a wet Sunday for many.
