Team GB has made a successful start at the Winter Olympics with Matt Weston clinching a gold medal in the men’s skeleton event. Weston, aged 28, entered the Milano Cortina competition as a prominent contender for a medal. He displayed a strong performance in the initial heats, leading the pack after the first two rounds.
His first two runs clocked in at 56.21 and 55.88 seconds, accumulating a total time of 1:52.09 going into the second day. Weston continued his impressive streak with a swift time of 55.63 in the third heat. The pinnacle of his performance came in the final run where he set a track record time of 55.61, resulting in an emotional celebration with his teammate Marcus Wyatt and the Team GB coaching staff.
This victory marked a significant turnaround for Weston, who had finished 15th in the previous Winter Olympics. On the other hand, Wyatt, despite an improved performance on day two, secured the seventh position with a total time of 3:45.77.
Speaking about his triumph, Weston expressed his gratitude, emphasizing the sacrifices made by his loved ones for his Olympic journey. The gold medal for Weston has propelled Team GB onto the Winter Olympics medal table. In addition, German athletes Axel Jungk and Christopher Grotheer secured the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Lizzie Yarnold commented on Weston’s remarkable speed and split-second decision-making during his runs, highlighting the intense physical and emotional demands of the sport. Team GB’s chef de mission, Eve Muirhead, praised Weston’s composure under pressure and acknowledged the tremendous support that contributed to his success.
