Model’s Outback Adventure Turns Deadly

InternationalModel's Outback Adventure Turns Deadly

Influenced by the movie ‘Crocodile Dundee’, Ginger Meadows, an American model, was inspired to embark on a journey to Australia’s Outback to experience it firsthand. However, her expedition took a tragic turn.

Hailing from Snowmass Village, Colorado, a renowned ski resort, the 24-year-old ventured to the arid terrains of Darwin, Northern Territory, on March 29, 1987. Accompanied by her friend Jane Burchett, she planned to visit King’s Cascade aboard the luxury boat Lady G before heading to Papua New Guinea. The vessel was under the command of skipper Bruce Fitzpatrick and a small crew as they approached the stunning yet perilous waterfall known for its crocodile population.

Despite warnings about the dangerous crocodiles inhabiting the waters, Ginger and Jane disregarded the risks and decided to take a brief swim. A massive saltwater crocodile, approximately four meters long, menacingly approached the unsuspecting women as they found themselves trapped against the waterfall. Jane narrated the harrowing encounter with the crocodile.

Recalling the attack, Jane stated, “It swam up to us with its mouth open. I threw my shoe at it, striking its head and causing it to close its mouth. Ginger, perhaps thinking she could reach the shoreline, attempted to swim away.” Tragically, Ginger was overpowered by the swift crocodile and faced a dire situation.

Describing the fatal moment, Jane explained, “She released my arm, leaped off the ledge, swam briefly, and the crocodile seized her around the waist, dragging her underwater. It resurfaced, holding her in front of me, arms raised, looking at me before submerging again.”

Ginger’s remains were discovered the following day, coincidentally her 25th birthday. Chief Inspector Arnold Davies from the Port of Broome regional police recounted the recovery effort where a crocodile attempted to breach the body bag containing her remains near the river mouth.

Dwayne McCaulley, Meadows’ estranged husband, flew in to identify her body. In a 2017 interview with the Daily Mail, Bruce reiterated his caution to Ginger about the crocodile-infested waters, emphasizing the danger they posed. Ginger’s demise stands as a notable crocodile attack in Australian history, with statistics revealing numerous such incidents in the Northern Territory over the years.
