Thousands of households in the UK are set to benefit from a £150 credit provided by their energy supplier this month. Utilita has begun distributing the Warm Home Discount funds to smart prepay customers, aiming to complete payments by the end of January.
The Warm Home Discount scheme offers a £150 credit directly to the electricity account of eligible households, based on specific qualifying benefits claimed on the designated date, which varies annually. To receive the discount this year, individuals must have been claiming the qualifying benefits as of August 24, 2025.
Residents in England and Wales will automatically receive the Warm Home Discount, while those in Scotland will only receive it automatically if they receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit. Other eligible individuals must apply manually through their energy provider, as the scheme is not available in Northern Ireland.
Following a decision by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), the requirement to demonstrate high energy usage to qualify for the Warm Home Discount in England and Wales has been eliminated. This change is expected to increase the number of households benefiting from the discount by 2.7 million, reaching an estimated total of 6.1 million households.
Energy bills have recently increased, with the Ofgem price cap rising to £1,758 for a standard dual fuel household paying by direct debit. Individuals on standard variable rate tariffs are covered by the Ofgem price cap, but the total energy cost is still based on actual usage of gas and electricity.
