“Construction Crane Collapse Derails Thai Passenger Train, 29 Dead”

International"Construction Crane Collapse Derails Thai Passenger Train, 29 Dead"

A tragic incident unfolded in north-eastern Thailand as a construction crane toppled onto a passenger train in motion, resulting in a devastating derailment that claimed the lives of at least 29 individuals. The calamity also left 64 people wounded, with rescue teams tirelessly working to search through the wreckage and provide immediate medical assistance.

The derailment transpired on a section of a high-speed rail endeavor aimed at linking China with various parts of south-east Asia. The crane, employed in constructing an elevated portion of the railway, plummeted while the train journeyed from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province. Images captured the chaotic aftermath, with smoke billowing above the site and construction machinery dangling amidst concrete pillars.

Transport minister Piphat Ratchakitprakan disclosed that 195 passengers were aboard the train, prompting an urgent investigation into the incident. The collapsed elevated segment is part of a collaborative Thai-Chinese initiative connecting Bangkok to Nong Khai province at the Laos border.

Authorities have now confirmed the death toll at 29, with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul demanding accountability for the tragedy. The exact cause remains unclear, though negligence and other factors are being considered as potential contributors. Prime Minister Charnvirakul stressed the importance of scrutinizing any construction errors or deviations from safety protocols that may have led to the catastrophe.
