“Labour Party Leader Warns Putin Over UK Surveillance in Channel”

Politics"Labour Party Leader Warns Putin Over UK Surveillance in Channel"

The leader of the Labour Party has issued a warning to Vladimir Putin about the UK’s surveillance of Russian activities in British waters following the sighting of a suspicious vessel in the Channel.

Anna Turley mentioned that Keir Starmer is collaborating with international partners and expressed her pride in his efforts on the global stage. An oil tanker named Tavian was observed heading towards Finland, passing 20 miles north of Guernsey in the early morning, based on ship tracking data.

There are suspicions that Tavian is linked to Vladimir Putin’s ‘shadow fleet,’ which is allegedly used to circumvent restrictions on Russian oil trade.

Labour Party chair Ms. Turley emphasized the government’s ability to closely monitor maritime activities and highlighted the leadership shown by Keir Starmer in international engagements, particularly in supporting Ukraine.

Within a day of this incident, the UK assisted the United States in seizing a Russian-flagged tanker in the North Atlantic. Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander described the seized vessel, the Marinera, as part of Russia’s clandestine fleet financing the conflict in Ukraine.

He stressed the importance of UK cooperation with global allies, such as the US, to combat Russian sanctions evasion efforts. The operation to intercept the ship involved RAF surveillance aircraft and the naval supply ship RFA Tideforce.

The Venezuelan-associated vessel, previously known as the Bella 1, was intercepted in the waters between Iceland and Scotland. Following the operation, the US military’s European Command expressed gratitude to the UK for its support during the mission.

Mr. Alexander, speaking on BBC Radio Scotland, explained that the vessel had disabled its transponders and was classified as a stateless ship under international law. He reiterated the UK’s commitment to preventing illegal financing of conflicts and terrorism, stating that collaboration with allies is crucial to counter Russian sanction-busting activities.

Efforts are ongoing to disrupt the financial channels supporting Putin’s military operations, as confirmed by authorities in the UK and other countries.
