US Mulls Military Options for Greenland Amid Rising Tension

UpdatesUS Mulls Military Options for Greenland Amid Rising Tension

Sir Keir Starmer discussed matters concerning Greenland in a recent conversation with Donald Trump, as confirmed by Downing Street. Reports suggest the US is considering military options to acquire the semi-autonomous Danish territory, citing national security concerns. While specifics of Sir Keir’s remarks were not disclosed by Downing Street, the UK Prime Minister has emphasized that Greenland’s fate should be determined solely by Greenland and Denmark.

The potential takeover of Greenland by the US has strained relations between the US and Europe, with Denmark’s prime minister cautioning that such an acquisition could impact NATO. The conversation between Sir Keir and Trump also touched upon the seizure of the oil tanker Marinera, ongoing discussions regarding Ukraine, and American military involvement in Venezuela.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously mentioned Trump’s contemplation of purchasing Greenland, leaving open the possibility of using force if needed. In a separate development, Lord Peter Mandelson, a former US ambassador, criticized European nations for their exaggerated concerns about Greenland, attributing it to their diminishing global influence.

Mandelson dismissed fears of a US invasion of Greenland as theatrical and urged for increased American presence in the region to counter potential threats from Russia and China. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy is scheduled to meet with US Vice-President JD Vance, with Greenland expected to be a topic of discussion during the visit commemorating America’s independence anniversary.

Lammy and Vance, who share a long-standing friendship, are set to engage in talks following the recent phone call between Starmer and Trump, which occurred after US forces apprehended Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and transported him to New York.
