“Thai King Rama X’s $32B Wealth Trumps UK’s King Charles III”

International"Thai King Rama X's $32B Wealth Trumps UK's King Charles III"

Excluding the £15 billion value of the Crown Estate, which is technically owned by the monarch but managed commercially on his behalf, King Charles III’s personal wealth is estimated to be around £640 million. This amount, while significant, is overshadowed by the immense fortune of Thailand’s King Rama X.

The opulent Eastern monarch has reportedly utilized part of his £32 billion wealth to acquire 17,000 residences, 38 private jets, 300 automobiles, and 52 luxury yachts.

Officially recognized as His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun, the Thai king assumed the throne in 2016, following the demise of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. He delayed his coronation to observe a mourning period for his father.

Upon becoming the 10th ruler of the Chakri dynasty, which has governed Thailand since 1782, Rama inherited a legacy valued at $43 billion (approximately £32 billion), instantly propelling him to the title of the world’s wealthiest monarch. His wealth is estimated to be roughly 50 times greater than that of King Charles.

Rama has reportedly managed his vast wealth shrewdly by investing in real estate and the telecommunications sector, significantly increasing his already substantial fortune.

The king’s expansive property holdings include commercial edifices, luxury hotels, and historic palaces.

He is also rumored to possess a notable collection of about 300 luxury vehicles, ranging from classic Rolls-Royces to state-of-the-art supercars. Rama’s personal aviation fleet consists of 38 helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, many of which are custom-modified to meet his specific needs.

In accordance with Thai tradition, he maintains a ceremonial fleet of 52 golden barges for customary river processions that symbolize the monarchy’s deep cultural connections to the nation.

Similar to Britain’s Crown Estate, Thailand administers the Crown Property Bureau, which oversees the royal family’s business interests. However, Rama has increasingly tightened his personal grip on the organization.

Some Thai citizens have challenged Rama’s reign, advocating for democratic reforms, constitutional amendments, and the abolition of Thailand’s lèse-majesté laws that criminalize any criticism of the monarch.

Questions have also emerged regarding the king’s substantial wealth, which many believe contrasts starkly with Thailand’s prevalent economic disparities.

In 2019, Rama brought two military units under his direct command, a move characterized by Joshua Kurlantzick of the Council on Foreign Relations as an attempt to steer the country “closer to an absolute monarchy.”

In an analysis for World Politics Review, Kurlantzick observed that while his father, Bhumibol, had been relatively discreet in his political maneuvers, Rama has “successfully positioned himself at the core of Thai politics, diminishing the influence of both the military and politicians in the process.”
