“Former Russian PM: UK-France Troop Deployment Surprises Putin”

Politics"Former Russian PM: UK-France Troop Deployment Surprises Putin"

Russia’s former Prime Minister commented on the recent commitment by the UK and France to deploy troops in Ukraine, stating that this move has surprised Vladimir Putin. Mikhail Kasyanov highlighted that the formation of a coalition willing to take action has left the Russian leader uncertain about his next steps. The announcement came after UK opposition leader Keir Starmer announced plans for military installations in Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement.

In an interview with Times Radio, Kasyanov emphasized that Putin will need to adjust his approach in light of these developments. He noted that the coalition’s decision in Paris to prioritize security guarantees for Ukraine marked a significant shift in strategy, distancing themselves from Putin’s demands and aligning more closely with former US President Trump’s stance.

Furthermore, Kasyanov praised the reaffirmation of transatlantic unity, pointing out that Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, endorsed the agreements reached. The prospect of foreign troops on Ukrainian soil has seemingly left Putin without a clear response, prompting the need for a change in his approach.

The joint declaration signed by the UK, France, and Ukraine in Paris includes plans for establishing secure facilities to aid Ukraine in its defense efforts. This move follows criticism from a close ally of Putin, Dmitry Rogozin, who labeled Starmer as “illiterate and a fool” for supporting British troop deployment in Ukraine, potentially exposing the UK to Russian attacks.

Notably, US envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed American support for security guarantees and readiness to defend Ukraine in case of breaches in the peace agreement. The proposed peace plan outlines the involvement of European and non-European nations in a multinational force for Ukraine, with a focus on deterring Russian aggression and supporting Ukraine’s military capabilities.

Starmer expressed optimism about the united front presented by European and American allies alongside Ukrainian President Zelensky for peace efforts. Despite progress, challenges lie ahead as they work towards achieving lasting peace in the region.
