Having endured an abusive marriage that culminated in a vicious acid attack by her ex-husband, leaving her blind in one eye and scarred, Hua found solace in the digital realm of Douyin, China’s equivalent of TikTok. It was here that she discovered a special effect that inspired her to recreate the image of her missing eye using makeup.
Despite initially struggling with the artistic process, Hua persevered, seeking guidance from her daughter and gradually improving her technique. Her online makeup tutorials have garnered a global following, offering hope and inspiration to others who have faced similar violence.
Hua’s personal struggles did not end with the acid attack. Following her recovery, she found love again but tragically, her new husband was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Determined to provide for her family, Hua worked tirelessly to ensure her husband could spend quality time with their child before his passing.
The prevalence of acid attacks, particularly targeting women, is on the rise globally, with the UK experiencing a significant increase in such assaults. Despite the alarming statistics, only a small percentage of offenders have been prosecuted, largely due to victims’ and witnesses’ reluctance to come forward out of fear or trauma.
