“Left-leaning Egan Wins Unison General Secretary Election”

Politics"Left-leaning Egan Wins Unison General Secretary Election"

Keir Starmer faced a setback as a left-leaning candidate, Andrea Egan, emerged victorious in the election for Unison General Secretary, a key supporter of the Labour Party. Egan secured nearly 60% of the vote, defeating Christina McAnea, who had been a strong ally of Starmer and had maintained a close relationship between the union and the Labour Party.

The election outcome presents a challenge for Labour, as Egan, previously expelled from the party in 2022, campaigned on a platform to reassess Unison’s ties with Labour, potentially influencing the balance on Labour’s National Executive Committee. Unison, the largest trade union in the UK with approximately 1.3 million members, predominantly from the NHS, care, and public sector, plays a significant role as a major donor and affiliate of the Labour Party.

Egan’s pledge to review the union’s relationship with Labour to ensure alignment with union policies resonated with members. The shift in leadership signifies a move towards empowering rank-and-file members to shape the union’s direction to advocate for their interests against challenges like underfunding and low pay.

Notably, Egan, a social worker from Bolton, committed to forgoing the General Secretary salary in favor of a social worker’s wage. Her past association with a proscribed Marxist group led to her expulsion from Labour, and she has shown support for Your Party, Jeremy Corbyn’s new left-wing initiative.

In response to Egan’s election, Starmer extended congratulations and expressed readiness for collaboration. He acknowledged McAnea’s contributions, particularly in advancing worker rights and securing fair pay agreements for social care workers under the Labour government.

Hollie Ridley, General Secretary of the Labour Party, lauded McAnea’s efforts in championing workers’ rights and emphasized the pivotal role she played in legislative successes benefiting workers. Ridley also commended Egan on her new role, expressing eagerness to work together to uphold Labour values and continue advocating for a fairer future in Britain.
