To address this issue, local villagers creatively crafted large, colorful woolly garments for the elephants to keep them warm. The Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Center in Mathura provides sanctuary for these elephants, many of which were rescued from illegal captivity and exploitation. Kartick Satyanarayan, co-founder and CEO of Wildlife SOS, emphasized the importance of safeguarding the elephants from harsh winter conditions due to their vulnerabilities from past abuses and health issues like arthritis.

While some may assume elephants can regulate their body temperature naturally, rescued elephants with health challenges such as arthritis and compromised immunity require additional warmth during extreme cold spells. For these vulnerable animals, the hand-knitted sweaters serve as essential medical care, providing insulation that their bodies struggle to maintain.
