Daniel Wells is determined to prove Ronnie O’Sullivan wrong after facing harsh criticism from the snooker icon. During his stint as an amateur at the 2023 Welsh Open, O’Sullivan, working as a pundit on Eurosport, advised Wells to stick to part-time play rather than pursue a return to the professional circuit. The seven-time world champion expressed his opinion that Wells should not aim for the professional level as he lacks the mental fortitude required.
Despite O’Sullivan’s critical assessment, Wells defied the odds and reached the last 16 of the same tournament, even securing a victory over the current world number one, Judd Trump. Unfazed by O’Sullivan’s comments, Wells successfully returned to the World Snooker Tour.
Ranked 41st globally, Wells has delivered notable performances this season, including a semi-final appearance at the Xi’an Grand Prix where he faced eventual champion Mark Williams. As he prepares for the UK Championship qualifying rounds, Wells acknowledges that O’Sullivan’s comments serve as motivation for him to excel in the sport. Wells emphasized that he values the recognition from O’Sullivan, despite the criticism, and views it as an opportunity to prove his detractors wrong.
In contrast, O’Sullivan suffered a 4-0 defeat by Shaun Murphy in the first round of the Riyadh Season Snooker Championship. Murphy swiftly eliminated the 49-year-old in just over an hour. O’Sullivan will now focus on the upcoming UK Championship, commencing on November 29, where he is set to compete against current world champion Zhao Xintong in the quarter-finals.
