Greenlandic Soldier Warns Against Trump’s Greenland Invasion

InternationalGreenlandic Soldier Warns Against Trump's Greenland Invasion

A soldier from Greenland, serving in Afghanistan alongside US troops, indirectly criticized President Donald Trump’s aspirations to acquire the Danish territory. Salik Augustinussen, a soldier from Greenland, cautioned US troops against following Trump’s directive to invade Greenland, emphasizing the unity between the two nations in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Greenlandic soldiers, part of the Danish armed forces, were among the 18,000 troops deployed to Afghanistan following the invocation of Article 5, which requires member nations to assist each other in times of attack.

Denmark, a loyal ally to the US and NATO, suffered significant losses in Operation Enduring Freedom post-9/11, with 43 troops sacrificed. Despite Denmark’s commitment, Trump’s threats of a Greenland invasion, coupled with disparaging remarks about Denmark’s ability to safeguard the Arctic territory, have sparked controversy.

Salik expressed his allegiance to the Kingdom of Denmark and NATO, highlighting the shared history of cooperation between US and Danish troops in Afghanistan. He warned of the repercussions of a potential US military incursion into Greenland, characterizing it as an assault on NATO allies and the Kingdom of Denmark.

The Veteran Project Greenland, assisting veterans and families in Greenland, voiced concerns over the destabilizing effect of the annexation rhetoric emanating from the White House. The organization emphasized Greenland’s sovereignty and criticized the disrespect shown towards the Greenlandic people and veterans across Denmark.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated that Greenland is not up for sale, emphasizing the island’s future should be determined by its inhabitants. Polling data revealed minimal support among Greenlanders for joining the US, with the majority preferring to remain part of Denmark or pursue independence.
