NationalTrump Criticizes UK Over Greenland, Threatens Tariffs

Donald Trump has targeted the UK in his escalating threats to acquire Greenland. In a recent post on Truth Social, the US President criticized the UK’s decision to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, calling it an “act of GREAT STUPIDITY.” Trump argued that this move by the UK further justifies the US’s need to take control of Greenland.

Sir Keir Starmer is scheduled to meet with ministers at his weekly Cabinet gathering following his call for diplomacy in response to Trump’s trade war threats over Greenland. Trump reaffirmed his commitment to imposing tariffs on the UK and European allies who oppose his Greenland acquisition plan. The European Union plans to convene an emergency summit in Brussels to discuss how to address Trump’s latest ultimatum.

In his social media post, Trump criticized the UK for allegedly planning to hand over Diego Garcia, a strategically important US military base, to Mauritius without any valid reason. He emphasized that powerful nations like China and Russia perceive such actions as signs of weakness and highlighted the importance of the US’s strong leadership under his administration. Trump reiterated the necessity for Greenland to be acquired due to national security concerns.

The Chagos Islands have been under British control since 1814, with the agreement last year to transfer sovereignty to Mauritius while retaining control of the UK-US military base on Diego Garcia. Trump’s remarks come amidst backing from European allies for Greenland’s autonomy, with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper asserting that Greenland’s fate should be determined solely by its residents and Denmark. Denmark has warned that any US attempt to seize Greenland would jeopardize NATO.

Trump previously disclosed a positive phone call with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and hinted at a meeting in Davos to address Greenland’s significance for global security. He reiterated his tariff threats against the UK and other NATO members until an agreement is reached for the US to purchase Greenland from Denmark. Trump’s stance on potential tariffs and the acquisition of Greenland has drawn mixed reactions from European leaders, with Germany expressing a desire for peaceful resolution and readiness to protect European interests if necessary.

Starmer’s representative conveyed the UK Prime Minister’s disapproval of Trump’s tariff threats against NATO allies, emphasizing the importance of collective security within the alliance. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz echoed the sentiment, advocating for de-escalation and diplomatic resolutions while affirming the readiness to safeguard European and national interests if required. Merkel expressed hopes for a meeting with Trump during his Davos visit.
