Keir Starmer has revealed his selection to take over from Peter Mandelson as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States. Christian Turner, a seasoned diplomat and former Political Director at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCDO), has been appointed as the next representative in Washington DC, as announced by the government.
Previously designated as the UK’s Ambassador to the United Nations in May, Dr. Turner has now been reassigned from New York to Washington DC, assuming the role of Britain’s liaison with the Trump administration. This move follows Lord Mandelson’s dismissal as the Ambassador to Washington due to disclosures regarding his association with the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
With a background as a career diplomat, Dr. Turner served as the British High Commissioner to Pakistan from December 2019 to January 2023. He also held positions as an international affairs advisor and Deputy National Security Advisor during Theresa May’s tenure as Prime Minister.
Commenting on the appointment, Keir Starmer expressed his satisfaction with Christian Turner’s selection, emphasizing the significance of the special relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States.
