UK Braces for Severe Snowstorm & Freezing Temperatures

UpdatesUK Braces for Severe Snowstorm & Freezing Temperatures

The United Kingdom braces for harsh weather conditions with snowfall expected to hit London and Birmingham, reaching up to 25 inches in some areas. The upcoming snowy spell, predicted to arrive imminently, will cover one region with 65cm (25 inches) of snow today. Weather maps from WXCharts, utilizing data from MetDesk, show temperatures plummeting to -11C in parts of Scotland as a cold wave sweeps across the country.

Multiple yellow warnings for ice and snow have been issued by the Met Office, affecting various regions. Four yellow alerts were in place for Monday, with an additional five yellow weather warnings announced for today. The National Weather Agency cautions that the snow and icy conditions could disrupt travel and may cause power outages in some areas due to the severe weather. WXCHARTS maps indicate heavy snowfall in regions including Inverness, Dundee, Aberdeen, and Glasgow, with the Northern Highlands and the Isle of Skye expected to be buried under 65cm of snow.

By 6am on Tuesday, snowfall is projected to extend to parts of England, encompassing cities like London, Birmingham, Manchester, Stoke on Trent, and Newcastle. The forecast suggests that by Tuesday evening, even areas around Southampton, Bristol, Plymouth, and Cornwall will be covered in snow. The Met Office predicts wintry showers in Wales and southwest England on Tuesday morning, followed by a mix of rain, sleet, and snow moving southeastwards across Scotland and Northern Ireland before reaching Wales and England later in the day.

Matthew Lehnert, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, warns of disruptive snowfall potentially affecting central and northern Scotland from late Tuesday morning to early evening. He states that the UK will face various winter weather hazards throughout the week, including low temperatures, snow showers, and the risk of ice. The Met Office forecasts a continuation of cold weather with intermittent rain, sleet, and snow across the country, accompanied by strong winds.

Looking ahead to the weekend and early next week, the Met Office expects a changeable period with frontal systems from the Atlantic affecting the UK, bringing rain possibly preceded by snow in certain areas, particularly in the north and east. Significant snowfall may occur in some places, especially on northern hills. The weather may include strong winds interspersed with drier intervals under high-pressure ridges, with potential frost and wintry showers along northerly coasts. After a cold start, temperatures are expected to approach average levels, reducing the frequency of wintry hazards slightly. However, there is a possibility of a brief return to drier and colder conditions towards the end of this period.
