“8-Year-Old Girl Found Deceased on Tribal Lands”

National"8-Year-Old Girl Found Deceased on Tribal Lands"

An 8-year-old girl who had gone missing on tribal lands in northern Arizona was tragically found deceased, according to authorities on Friday, January 16.

Maleeka Boone, as identified by Navajo Nation officials, was last spotted on Thursday evening in the Coalmine Canyon area, situated 240 miles north of Phoenix in the United States. The FBI, in collaboration with tribal police, is leading the investigation; however, specific details surrounding her death have not been disclosed.

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren expressed deep sorrow over Maleeka’s passing in a social media video, stating that the tragedy has deeply affected him. Her disappearance prompted the activation of a Turquoise Alert, a system designed for missing Native Americans.

In Arizona, the introduction of the alert system, known as “Emily’s Law,” was inspired by the case of Emily Pike, whose remains were discovered on February 14 over 100 miles away from the group home she had departed in Mesa, Arizona. Pike’s tragic fate sparked renewed efforts to raise awareness about the high number of disappearances and violent deaths within Native American communities, leading legislators to amend the bill in her honor.
