A mother in Pennsylvania, Chazzity Candelario, was sentenced to 16 months to five years in prison for shackling her 11-year-old son to a fuel tank for 17 hours. Candelario explained that she resorted to this extreme measure because she found it difficult to control her children while she was at work. The incident came to light when law enforcement officers were called to her home in North Lebanon Township on January 11, 2025, after receiving reports of a boy restrained with handcuffs.
Authorities discovered that the child had been handcuffed to an oil tank in the basement by his mother. When Candelario was absent, her children led officers to the bedroom where their brother had been handcuffed to a bunk bed railing. The child revealed that he had been confined in the basement initially and then inadvertently attached himself to the bunk bed.
Candelario had a history of legal issues, including charges related to endangering the welfare of children and drug possession in 2017. During her sentencing, she remained silent while her lawyer expressed her remorse. The District Attorney emphasized Candelario’s betrayal of her duty as a mother to care for and protect her children. The judge admonished Candelario, stating that such actions should never have occurred and urged her to make amends with her children.
The case underscores the importance of proper care and responsibility towards children, highlighting the severe consequences of neglect and abuse.
