“£3 Billion Allocated to Boost Special Education Support”

Politics"£3 Billion Allocated to Boost Special Education Support"

The government has allocated over £3 billion to establish numerous new specialist places and improve teacher training for special education needs and disabilities (SEND). Schools across the country are set to have dedicated SEND leads in every Best Start Family Hub as part of the initiative.

In response to recent criticisms from Reform UK party figures regarding the overdiagnosis of SEND issues, Education Minister Georgia Gould has pushed back against the notion of blaming parents for their children’s challenges. Gould emphasized the importance of supporting parents and working collaboratively to address system failures rather than assigning blame.

Reform UK has been vocal about what they perceive as an excessive diagnosis of SEND in children, with claims of families exploiting the system for financial gain. However, Gould’s stance remains focused on engaging with parents and stakeholders to create effective solutions for children with special educational needs.

Despite challenges ahead, Gould expressed optimism, highlighting the dedication of teachers and the broader community in supporting children with SEND. She emphasized the need for a collaborative approach to address the complex issues within the education system, acknowledging the widespread willingness to make meaningful changes for the benefit of all students.
