“America’s Longest-Serving Solitary Prisoner Dies at 67”

National"America's Longest-Serving Solitary Prisoner Dies at 67"

A man described as the most dangerous prisoner ever held in the US prison system spent an unprecedented 36 years in solitary confinement, marking a record in federal prison history. Thomas Silverstein, known as “Terrible Tom” or “America’s most dangerous prisoner,” was a seemingly ordinary-looking man with a smile that defied his violent capabilities. His notorious reputation stemmed from multiple murders and his leadership in a feared prison gang that prompted the establishment of the ultra-secure “supermax” prison.

Silverstein, who lived 67 years, spent 42 of them behind bars, with 36 years in isolation under strict conditions, including periods of no human contact. His actions, particularly the murder of correction officer Merle Clutts, led to intensified security measures, such as keeping a constant ceiling light in his cell and limiting interactions with guards.

The killing of Clutts in 1983 at Marion prison in Illinois, orchestrated with the help of fellow gang members, triggered a prolonged lockdown at the facility. Subsequently, Silverstein was transferred to the Atlanta prison, where he was labeled for “no human contact.” The incidents at Marion prompted the establishment of the federal supermax prison in Florence, Colorado, dedicated to high-security inmates like Silverstein.

Before the Clutts murder, Silverstein had already taken the lives of two other prisoners, highlighting his violent past and ties to the Aryan Brotherhood gang. Despite his affluent upbringing in Long Beach, California, Silverstein’s criminal path started early, leading to armed robbery convictions and an eventual connection with the notorious gang.

Author Pete Earley, who interacted with Silverstein during his imprisonment, shed light on the brutal environment that influenced Silverstein’s transformation into a killer. Despite his violent history, some individuals who knew Silverstein personally portrayed him in a less menacing light, emphasizing the challenging circumstances he faced within the prison system.

Silverstein passed away in 2019 at the age of 67, following complications from heart surgery. His death prompted reflections on his treatment in prison, with officials acknowledging the harsh conditions imposed on him due to the lack of alternative measures, given his violent tendencies and notorious reputation.
