The His Majesty’s Government Communications Centre (HMGCC), established on the brink of World War Two, is seeking fresh approaches to embedding covert technology into garments. Engineers at this James Bond-esque facility are seeking collaboration with professionals from the television and film industry, as well as pantomime designers and technicians, to explore innovative ways to integrate and wear this technology.
Previously, the agency has solicited experts to contribute their expertise in crafting realistic facial disguises using lifelike materials to evade detection systems.
Established in 1938, the secretive HMGCC at Hanslope Park initially focused on establishing secure communications for foreign spies and diplomats. Renowned figure Alan Turing collaborated with HMGCC on speech encryption during World War Two following his crucial role in breaking the Enigma code at Bletchley Park.
Today, the base concentrates on fulfilling the UK’s technological security requirements for both domestic and international operations, encompassing intelligence gathering. With hundreds of scientists and engineers on staff, HMGCC operates under the oversight of Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.
Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty emphasized the imperative of innovation in developing top-tier technology to address evolving national security threats. He highlighted the agency’s efforts to engage with a wide array of talent, including professionals from the UK’s esteemed television, theatre, and film industries, to safeguard the nation.
HMGCC’s CEO George Williamson underscored the broad spectrum of technology domains covered in their collaborative challenges, ranging from quantum sensing to artificial intelligence and electronics. Williamson encouraged inventors from various sectors to rethink their technologies and consider how their expertise could be repurposed across different fields, even in unconventional areas like fashion or film.
