“UK Braces for Arctic Snowstorm as Temperatures Plummet”

Updates"UK Braces for Arctic Snowstorm as Temperatures Plummet"

Incredible photos capture the return of snow across the UK amid plummeting temperatures.

Yellow warnings are in effect across the country following overnight temperatures as low as -11°C in some areas. The cold snap has caused widespread disruptions, with numerous flights grounded at Manchester Airport and Liverpool John Lennon. Commuters are facing challenges on roads, railways, and in the air.

The wintry weather may not be over yet, as more snowfall could be on the way during the Arctic start to 2026. Predictions from Metdesk suggest that a 240-mile stretch of Wales and England could be blanketed with up to 10.6 inches of snow by Friday.

The affected region extends from Swansea to Norwich, with the heaviest snowfall expected in Wales and the Brecon Beacons National Park, where nearly a foot of snow could accumulate. Other parts of the UK are bracing for further updates from the Met Office.

The return to school has been disrupted, with hundreds of closures today. The UK Health Security Agency has issued Amber Cold Health Alerts for all of England until January 9, warning of the significant impact of extreme cold on vulnerable populations, especially those over 65 or with underlying health conditions.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert mentioned the range of winter weather hazards facing the country. Snow showers and icy conditions are expected, particularly in northern Scotland, with additional accumulations predicted. Mild air moving eastward from Tuesday may bring rain to the south, along with the possibility of organized snow in areas where the cold and mild air masses meet. Strong winds could also be a concern later in the week.
