“Storm Amy Brings 5cm/Hour Snowfall to UK”

Updates"Storm Amy Brings 5cm/Hour Snowfall to UK"

Parts of the United Kingdom are anticipating heavy snowfall at a rate of 5cm per hour following the passage of Storm Amy.

Weather models from the Global Forecast System (GFS) indicate that snow is expected to fall in various regions by mid-October, marking the onset of the winter season for many areas.

The forecast suggests that Scotland is likely to experience snowfall on October 18 and 19, particularly in regions like Perth, Inverness, and later spreading to areas further north and west such as Ross and Cromarty. Additionally, lower-lying areas across the UK are expected to face substantial rainfall during the same period.

Northern England and Scotland are expected to witness eastward-moving rain as conditions are projected to become increasingly unsettled towards the end of the month, according to the latest Met Office forecast spanning from October 18 to November 1.

Storm Amy, the first named storm of the season, is causing havoc in the UK with forecasted wind speeds of up to 100mph. Amber and yellow weather warnings have been issued across the country as the storm impacts Northern Ireland and north-west Scotland, while strong winds and heavy rainfall may affect other parts of the UK.

Jim Dale, a senior meteorologist from British Weather Services, emphasized the severity of the storm, stating that wind gusts could exceed 90mph in the most exposed areas of north and northwest Scotland. Describing the storm as a “weather bomb,” Dale highlighted the significant atmospheric pressure drop associated with Storm Amy.

The Met Office has issued three amber weather warnings for wind, signaling a risk to life, covering regions from Northern Ireland to northern Scotland starting from Friday afternoon through Saturday.
