George Galloway was reportedly detained by Metropolitan Police counter-terrorism officers under the Terrorism Act upon his return from Moscow. The former MP and his wife were stopped at Gatwick Airport after flying in from Abu Dhabi, following a trip to Moscow. Both individuals were detained but not arrested, and later allowed to continue their travels.
According to a Metropolitan Police spokesperson, a man in his 70s and a woman in her 40s were stopped under Schedule 3 of the Counter Terrorism and Border Security Act 2019, which permits authorities to question and search individuals suspected of engaging in “hostile activity” upon entry to the UK.
Galloway, who recently announced his intention to run for the Scottish Parliament in Nicola Sturgeon’s Glasgow Southside constituency after being ousted in the 2024 election, leads the Workers Party of Britain. The party denounced the detention as politically motivated.
In response to the incident, supporters have called for the immediate release of Galloway and his wife, expressing concerns about their well-being and legal rights.
