After being missing for a century, a stolen teepee cover will finally be returned to its rightful owners and their community in Saskatchewan. Chief Cory (Okimow) Dustyhorn of Kawacatoose First Nation collaborated with the Smithsonian Institution to secure the cover crafted by his great-great-grandfather over two years.
Accompanied by some family members and Indigenous studies professor Andrew Miller from the First Nations University of Canada, Dustyhorn is embarking on a 29-hour journey to Washington, D.C. to retrieve the teepee cover. They commenced their journey with a pipe ceremony, seeking guidance for their travels.
Dustyhorn expressed his emotions, stating that when they first started the process of reclaiming the cover, he never imagined this day would come. He shared his gratitude for those who supported him in this endeavor, especially those who are no longer present.
Phillip Dustyhorn, the eldest family member, is also part of the journey and expressed his joy at seeing the teepee cover returning to their family and community. He remembered hearing the story of the teepee throughout his childhood and is happy that it is being rightfully returned.
Miller played a crucial role in assisting the family throughout the repatriation process, attending numerous meetings and providing support. The group will meet with Smithsonian representatives at the National Museum of the American Indian to retrieve the teepee cover, unseen by any family member since 1926.
Miller mentioned the challenges faced during the process, including extensive report writing and permit applications. He expressed his satisfaction in being part of this journey and eagerly awaiting the return of the long-lost treasure.
Upon their return, the community plans to celebrate and hold a ceremony to mark this significant occasion.
