The issue of ultrasound appointment delays is widespread in Ontario, affecting many expectant mothers due to increasing waitlists and a shortage of sonographers. According to Tara Chegwin, the director of professional affairs at Sonography Canada, there are more than 10 million ultrasounds conducted annually across the country. However, despite the growing capacity for ultrasounds, the demand has also surged, presenting a long-standing challenge within the healthcare system.
Recent reports indicate that the average ultrasound wait time in Ontario is around four weeks, with a 20% vacancy rate for sonographers in 2024. Although obstetric ultrasounds are typically prioritized to align with specific pregnancy stages, other types of ultrasounds, such as abdominal or pelvic scans, may experience even longer delays.
Parents face significant pressure when trying to schedule ultrasounds, as each appointment must align with crucial milestones in the pregnancy. The responsibility often falls on them to locate available sonographers, leading to added stress and time-consuming efforts.
Efforts are underway to address the sonographer shortage in the province, including international recruitment and the establishment of new educational programs to produce more graduates annually. Despite these initiatives, expectant parents like Rebecca Kennedy Briand stress the importance of being prepared to travel for appointments and managing expectations amid the current challenges in the healthcare system.
