The Ottawa Redblacks have set a new record in the CFL for the longest losing streak in the modern era. Their 15th consecutive loss came at the hands of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers with a score of 33-21, extending their streak from the previous season. This surpasses the previous record held by the Shreveport Pirates, who lost 14 games in a row in 1994.
CFL historian and league’s associate vice-president of football analytics and statistics, Steve Daniel, confirmed Ottawa’s new record. This disappointing distinction was acknowledged by passionate Redblacks fan Jimmy Fata, who expressed frustration over the team’s performance.
The Redblacks’ losing streak is now the third-longest in the entire CFL history dating back to 1907. Another loss to the Montreal Alouettes would tie them with the Hamilton Wildcats for the second-longest losing streak. The longest streak belongs to the Ottawa Rough Riders and the Ottawa Senators, who collectively lost 25 consecutive games between 1928 and 1932.
Daniel noted the evolution of professional football in Canada post-World War II, emphasizing the significant changes in the sport’s competitiveness and professionalism. He also highlighted the need for the Redblacks to continue rebuilding their roster, particularly on defense.
Despite the Redblacks’ struggles, Fata emphasized the importance of supporting the team through thick and thin, likening it to raising a child. He remains optimistic about the team’s future despite the ongoing challenges.
