Serita Thurton netted two goals in the opening half as the underdog Calgary Wild stunned the leading Ottawa Rapid 4-3 in a Northern Super League clash at McMahon Stadium on Saturday. Kahli Johnson found the back of the net in the 15th minute to put the hosts ahead 1-0, with Thurton doubling the lead approximately 13 minutes later.
Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young scored in the 38th minute, followed by Melanie Forbes leveling the score at 2-2 one minute into added time before halftime. Right before the break, Thurton struck again for her second goal of the game, setting the Wild on course for victory.
Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for the Wild, who now hold a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws. Jyllissa Harris converted a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now have 10 wins, three losses, and three draws. Ottawa’s unbeaten streak of 10 matches came to an end.
Despite possessing the ball 54 percent of the time, the Rapid were outshot by the Wild 16-13 (with 9 shots on target to 6). The Wild earned six of the game’s 11 corners, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another game, Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to equalize the match and then secured a second goal five minutes into stoppage time in the second half, propelling the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C. Jordyn Rhodes had earlier scored in the 19th minute to give the fourth-place Tides a 1-0 lead.
The Rise, in fifth place, dominated possession with 56 percent and outshot the visitors 18-13, including 6 shots on target to 4. The Tides took four of the six corners in the game, while the Rise received two of the three yellow cards issued.
