In 2012, at a gaming convention, a board game designer challenged mathematician Eric Harshbarger to create dice that could determine who goes first in a game without any chance of a tie. Harshbarger, a senior lecturer at Auburn University, embraced the challenge, aiming to save time and quickly kickstart the gameplay.

After years of collaboration with computer scientists and mathematicians worldwide, Harshbarger and his team successfully developed a set of four 12-sided dice to resolve ties among two, three, or four players. However, creating a fair solution for five players posed a significant challenge.

Despite the complexity, the team persisted, exploring various theories and dice geometries. Eventually, a breakthrough came when a researcher in Australia proposed using five 120-sided dice. This innovative approach attracted attention, leading a Canadian software engineer, Paul Meyer, to join the project.

Meyer’s computational approach and mathematical insights led to the discovery of a solution using five 60-sided dice. This breakthrough, achieved after extensive verification, marked a significant milestone in the project. The resulting golf-ball-sized dice, designed for fairness, are now available for purchase, showcasing the successful fusion of mathematics and practicality.

Looking ahead, the research team, now including Meyer, continues to explore possibilities for optimizing dice designs for five players and potentially expanding to accommodate six players. Despite facing challenges with existing tools, Harshbarger remains open to unexpected solutions, emphasizing the allure of mathematical puzzles that defy straightforward answers.
