In a strategic shift in the battle against climate change, the United Nations has recognized that Earth has missed the opportunity to prevent some of the most severe impacts of global warming. Officials emphasize the urgent need to bring temperatures below the dangerous threshold and back to a safer level.
The Earth is on track to surpass the agreed-upon safe temperature limit set in the 2015 Paris climate agreement due to the heat generated by the combustion of coal, oil, and gas, according to a grim inaugural report released by the United Nations Environment Program. Rather than conceding defeat, scientists and UN representatives propose efforts to curtail excessive warming and subsequently lower temperatures to the established threshold. Nonetheless, this will entail decades of escalating weather-related calamities, sea level rise, species extinctions, and ice/glacier melting.
“Humanity is rapidly approaching the brink of an irreversible climate crisis,” remarked United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
Following a period of surpassing the critical warming limit, the new plan envisages returning below the threshold by phasing out fossil fuel consumption and devising methods to extract carbon dioxide emissions from industries. “It’s a wake-up call. We must adapt to this warmer reality,” stated report co-author Richard Betts, a climate expert at the University of Exeter. “Yet, there are numerous actions we can take to mitigate further warming.”
Post the Paris climate accord, the United Nations tasked its climate science division with exploring various warming thresholds. Scientists widely acknowledged a cap of 1.5 degrees Celsius above mid-19th-century levels as the tipping point, beyond which significant adverse effects on humanity and the environment manifest at 2 degrees Celsius but not at 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Some experts estimate that the Earth is presently at 1.4 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, calculated over a 20-year average rather than a single year. Despite prior claims by UN officials that restricting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius was still feasible, the recent report finally concedes that the world will breach the 1.5-degree threshold “in the near future.”
According to the report, the most optimistic scenario predicts a peak warming of 1.8 degrees Celsius around mid-century if nations pursue ambitious climate objectives. However, existing governmental policies are likely to elevate temperatures to 2.6 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by 2100. The UN urges policymakers to prepare for a future where the Earth surpasses this limit and subsequently rectifies the trajectory to cool temperatures.
The report forecasts that after crossing 1.5 degrees Celsius, global temperatures will follow a trajectory of additional warming, reaching a peak before gradually declining below the 1.5-degree mark, ideally by the century’s end. This phenomenon, termed “overshoot,” is endorsed by the report and experts.
“While the 1.5-degree target remains the objective, we must now approach it from a different perspective,” stated UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen. Climate scientist Andrew Weaver from the University of Victoria emphasized that each incremental temperature reduction below the limit translates to reduced damage.
During the overshoot phase, the report anticipates increased casualties and illnesses due to exacerbated climate change and extreme weather conditions. Food production is projected to decline, leading to heightened hunger, exacerbated water scarcity, economic impacts, and the extinction of species like coral.
The report underscores the urgent need for transformational adaptation to prepare for a warmer future, emphasizing the necessity for innovative thinking, new governance structures, and financial mechanisms.
Furthermore, the report warns of potential “tipping points” with irreversible consequences, such as the loss of major ice sheets, rainforests, and disruptions to ocean circulation systems. The final phase of overshoot involves cooling the planet by extracting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it, with suggestions of novel approaches beyond just tree planting.
However, some scientists caution that these methods may be unreliable and costly, emphasizing the urgent need for rapid action to mitigate the impacts of overshooting the warming threshold.
