Tens of thousands of music enthusiasts gathered at Great Park in Irvine, California, last weekend to enjoy live performances by their favorite artists at a groundbreaking event aimed at supporting women’s health, reproductive rights, and combating gender-based violence.
Dubbed Daisy Chain Fields, this charity festival was organized by popular singer Olivia Rodrigo, drawing inspiration from the iconic Lilith Fair of the 1990s with its all-female lineup. The festival featured a mix of established and emerging stars, including queer pop artist Chappell Roan, rapper Doechii, and rock legends like Bikini Kill and Garbage.
Before the festival kicked off, Rodrigo proudly announced that they had raised $10 million for the event’s 10 non-profit partners, such as Planned Parenthood and the Black Mamas Matter Alliance. This amount was then generously matched by Melinda French Gates, doubling the total contribution to $20 million.
Rodrigo initially unveiled plans for the festival in June, emphasizing that all performers would participate for free, with proceeds going to organizations supporting women and girls. The event included special guest appearances, such as Alanis Morissette stepping in for Karen O to perform a revamped version of her hit song “Ironic” with Rodrigo.
The festival also featured a heartfelt performance of “Landslide” by Rodrigo and Stevie Nicks, along with a collaboration between Rodrigo and Lilith Fair founder Sarah McLachlan. McLachlan, reflecting on the festival’s significance, highlighted the progress made in empowering women since the inception of Lilith Fair in 1997.
Named after the concept of unity and strength in diversity, Daisy Chain Fields took place amidst ongoing challenges to women’s reproductive rights in the United States. Against a backdrop of legal changes and policy shifts, the festival served as a beacon of hope and solidarity for women and activists alike.
In addition to the musical acts, attendees immersed themselves in various art installations, including a LEGO mural and a display tracing the history of the Riot Grrrl movement. Notable contributions from artist activist group Guerrilla Girls and interactive installations by Yoko Ono and Jenny Holzer added depth and meaning to the festival experience.
Despite scorching temperatures exceeding 33°C, festivalgoers like Chase Martinez praised Daisy Chain Fields as a transformative and uplifting event. Martinez highlighted the inclusive and supportive atmosphere, particularly applauding the philanthropic initiatives that allowed attendees to engage with the festival’s charitable partners.
The festival’s impact resonated beyond the performances, with partner organizations like FreeFrom and the Center for Reproductive Rights expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support.
