The acclaimed comedy series, a collaboration between APTN, CBC, and Netflix, centers on Siaja (Anna Lambe), a young Inuk woman navigating life post-public breakup with her spouse.
The first season saw immense success, ranking in Netflix’s Top 10 in 33 countries and receiving acclaim for its blend of humor and poignant themes.
“We adore comedy with depth. Laughter is great, but so are tears,” shared co-creator and executive producer Stacey Aglok MacDonald with CBC News.
The show received significant acclaim, winning nine Canadian Screen Awards, including best comedy series and best lead actress in a comedy (Lambe).
Co-creator and executive producer Alethea Arnaquq-Baril expressed surprise at the show’s immense success, noting, “We knew something special was unfolding, but the extent of it caught us off guard.”
MacDonald added, “We were utterly delighted by it all.”
‘A Complex Situation’
Season 2 picks up from where Season 1 concluded. Siaja, a year into her fresh start, balances motherhood, work, and dating while navigating intricate relationships with her mother, Neevee (Maika Harper), and estranged father, Alistair (Jay Ryan).
The new season starts as Siaja grapples with her mother’s revelation about an older sister. Despite the challenges, she is committed to reshaping her life and defining her identity.
Her journey aligns with the Inuktitut principle of ᐱᓕᒻᒪᒃᓴᕐᓂᖅ (pilimmaksarniq) — mastering skills through observation, practice, and effort.
Lambe described her character’s life as “falling apart” in this season, with challenges escalating despite her efforts. The season ends with Siaja in a “chaotic place” in her bond with her mother.
Meanwhile, Neevee, characterized by Harper as “guarded,” begins to open up, revealing she has moved on from searching for her firstborn.
