“Aldi Remains UK’s Most Affordable Supermarket in Latest Which? Assessment”

Business"Aldi Remains UK's Most Affordable Supermarket in Latest Which? Assessment"

Aldi once again secures the title of the most affordable supermarket in the UK, as per the latest price assessment by Which?. In September, the average cost for 71 items at Aldi totaled £122.77, edging out its competitor Lidl by £1.18, where the same basket of goods averaged £123.95.

Which? conducts monthly comparisons of popular groceries at the eight largest supermarkets, factoring in regular and loyalty prices but excluding multi-buy offers. The recent analysis revealed that none of the 71 items surveyed were cheaper for Lidl Plus members this month. The list comprised both branded and own-label products such as Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.

Tesco claimed the third spot, with Clubcard holders spending an average of £135.64, while non-members paid £138.66 for the same items. Sainsbury’s Nectar cardholders faced an average bill of £138.74, whereas without the card, the cost rose to £142.70.

For a more extensive list of 186 items excluding Aldi and Lidl due to their narrower product range, Asda emerged as the most cost-effective option in September, with an average bill of £465.66. In comparison, Tesco’s Clubcard holders spent £472.45 for the identical basket.

Waitrose stood out as the priciest choice, with an average cost of £161.19 for a smaller shop and a significant jump to £531.39 for the larger list. Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, highlighted Aldi’s consistent affordability and Asda’s competitiveness in the broader grocery range.

As food prices rise and colder weather approaches, households concerned about expenses are advised to explore cost-saving options, potentially saving up to 36% by switching to a more budget-friendly supermarket.
