Initially, the White House stated that Trump was flying on Air Force One from Turkey to Britain after a NATO summit. However, moments after boarding Air Force One, Trump discreetly exited via the catering truck and transitioned to another plane for the journey to Britain, as per sources cited by the Washington Post.
Confirming the sequence of events, Trump revealed that the Secret Service and military recommended him to switch planes due to a perceived threat, which he claimed did not instill fear in him. He minimized the perceived risk to individuals remaining on the original plane, including White House officials, security personnel, and journalists.
Speaking to reporters following his return from an event in Ohio, Trump explained that authorities insisted he board a different plane due to a threat, a decision he implied he had to comply with. Despite the security concerns, Trump acknowledged receiving numerous threats but did not delve into specifics regarding the threat prompting the plane switch.
The situation raised security questions as Trump opted to utilize an older Air Force One for the journey back from Ankara, departing from the NATO summit, instead of the newly renovated Qatari-donated jet he had used for the initial leg of the trip. Before departing Ankara, Trump announced his shift to the older Air Force One for sentimental reasons, allowing U.S. service members stationed at RAF Mildenhall in Britain to tour the new plane while he traveled on the older jet. Reporters, who were led to believe they were on board with Trump on the older Air Force One, were instructed to keep window shades closed during the flight, adding to the air of secrecy surrounding the operation.
