Geoff Burrow, the father of rugby league icon Rob Burrow, has sadly passed away, as confirmed. Geoff played a crucial role in the notable awareness and fundraising campaign initiated following Rob’s diagnosis with motor neurone disease.
Leeds Rhinos conveyed their heartfelt condolences in a statement, acknowledging the loss of Geoff Burrow on Monday, March 30th, after a period of illness. Hailing from Leeds, Geoff was a relentless advocate for the MND community post Rob’s diagnosis in December 2019, and he continued his efforts even after Rob’s demise in June 2024.
Described as a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, Geoff introduced Rob to his first-ever Headingley game, igniting his passion for the Rhinos. Throughout his career as a trade union representative, Geoff championed for the voiceless.
The club extended its deepest sympathies to Geoff’s wife Irene and the entire Burrow family during this mournful period, urging for privacy. May Geoff rest in peace.
Rob Burrow, a revered figure in Leeds, was diagnosed with MND in late 2019 and passed away in June 2024. He tirelessly campaigned in his final years, supported by his family and former teammate Kevin Sinfield, who undertook several remarkable physical challenges to raise funds.
Their joint efforts led to the establishment of the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds. The center, costing £6.8 million, was inaugurated to the public in November 2025, following ground-breaking shortly after Rob’s demise.
Expressing gratitude to all the fundraisers, Geoff emphasized the collective impact on MND patients, families, and the exceptional staff at the center.
Geoff played a crucial role in caring for Rob and his children, allowing Rob’s wife Lindsey to continue her work as an NHS physiotherapist. Geoff reflected on Rob’s peaceful passing, highlighting the poignant moments shared in the hospital.
Warrington Wolves, Wigan Warriors, and St Helens each offered their condolences and support to the Burrow family during this challenging time.
