On 29 September 1969 at exactly 22:05 in the evening the quiet town of Tulbagh was rocked by a massive noise that came from beneath. It was like thunder from beneath.
The earth started shaking and so started the Tulbagh earthquake of 1969. People thought it was the end of the world. There was a story about a large sized woman forcing herself through her bathroom window, running naked into the streets. Building were damaged, people were flooding to the streets.
All the residents of Tulbagh were caught off guard, many had no blankets with them to take on the cold winter night. Tremors followed right through the night.
11 people died that night while many others managed to escape death.
